World Ocean Day Celebration 2022

“Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean”
June 8, 2022

The United Nation CY 2022 World Ocean Day Celebration with the theme “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean” seeks to promote safeguarding our ocean, its biodiversity, and building climate change resiliency. It is also a platform to raise awareness on our individual and collective duty to use the ocean’s resources sustainably and avoid practices that may negatively affect the ocean. In line with this, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources commemorated the celebration by implementing the “Bring Your Own Reusable Containers” Challenge in the DENR X Regional Office. As plastic waste is one of the leading causes of worsening of natural disasters, and ocean pollution and animal suffocation which affects ocean biodiversity and health, the DENR X aims to minimize plastic waste production and stop the use of single-use plastics in the compound itself. Through this, the DENR X also seeks to set an example of environmental sustainability to Non-Government Organizations, Private Institutions, and other National Government Agencies.

In this challenge, canteen vendors are not allowed to use plastics to wrap the food they sell. Instead, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable food containers, tumblers, and utensils or vendors can sell recyclable ones. The strict observation of this challenge over the years can certainly improve ocean health and vibrancy for sustaining the resources for the present and future generations.
